Booking sites list almost every hotel in the region as “Da Nang,” but a beachfront tower and a city-center business hotel can be 4 km apart, and in 2026 a “Da Nang” listing might even be 30 km away in Hoi An. Pick the wrong base and you spend your trip in Grab cars instead of on the sand. This guide breaks down the two main choices, beach or city, so you know what each one feels like before you book.
How Da Nang Is Laid Out
Da Nang is a long, narrow city squeezed between the sea and the hills. The Han River runs through the middle and ends at the coast. West of the river is the city center (Hai Chau district), with government buildings, markets, and old cafés. East of the river, a straight stretch of coast runs south from the Son Tra Peninsula to the Marble Mountains. This is the beach side, and My Khe is its main strip.
The distance between the two is short. The Dragon Bridge to the middle of My Khe is about 4 km. The airport sits near the center, about 3 km from the river and 5 to 6 km from the beach. That means both bases are quick to reach, and the real question is what you want outside your front door.
My Khe Beach: Sand, Surf and Sea-View Towers
My Khe is a wide, pale-sand beach lined with high-rise hotels, seafood restaurants, and beach cafés. Mornings start early. By 5:30 a.m., joggers, fishermen, and tai chi groups are out while the waves roll in. By afternoon the sand is full of umbrellas and sunburned families. At night, grilled squid smoke drifts along the promenade.
The stretch along Vo Nguyen Giap street has the most hotels, from slim 20-room places to big resorts. You can walk from your lobby to the water in two minutes, which is the main reason to stay here. The downside is that it can feel like a resort strip. Prices in restaurants closest to the sand run higher, and traffic along the beach road gets noisy on weekends.
An Thuong: The Beach Area With a Neighbourhood Feel
One block back from My Khe, the An Thuong grid of small streets (around An Thuong 1 to 5) is where many long-stay visitors settle. It has the best mix of walkability and choice: bakeries, brunch cafés, craft beer bars, street-side bun cha ca stalls, laundry shops, and cheap massage places. The area is compact enough to cover on foot, and the beach is a 5 to 10 minute walk.
The vibe is relaxed and international. It suits solo travellers, couples, and remote workers who want convenience without being right on the sand. Streets are narrow, so ask for a room away from corner bars if you sleep lightly.
Han River and the City Center
The city center feels like real Da Nang. Early in the morning, the smell of pork bones simmering for mì Quảng spreads from sidewalk shops near Han Market. Locals sit on plastic stools drinking iced coffee before work. Nearby you will find the Cham Museum, the Han River promenade, Con Market, and the Dragon Bridge. The bridge breathes fire and water at 9 p.m. on weekends, so check the current schedule.
Hotels here are mostly business-style or boutique, and they cost less than comparable beach hotels. Food is cheaper and more local. The trade-off is that there is no beach in walking distance. You will need a 10 to 15 minute ride to the sand, and the city can feel quiet after 10 p.m. outside the riverfront area.
Son Tra and Non Nuoc: Quieter Corners
If neither main area appeals, two alternatives exist. The Son Tra Peninsula, north of My Khe, has a few resorts surrounded by forest and rocky coves. It is peaceful and scenic but isolated, so you will rely on your hotel restaurant or a ride into town. The Lady Buddha statue and the viewpoint roads are close.
At the southern end, Non Nuoc Beach near the Marble Mountains has big resorts and golf, with fewer places to eat outside the hotels. It is about 9 to 10 km from the center, so it works best for families or couples who plan to stay put and use the hotel pool.
Getting Around From Each Base
From the airport, a Grab to My Khe costs about 80,000 to 120,000 VND ($3 to $5), and to the city center about 50,000 to 80,000 VND ($2 to $3). Beach to center is 40,000 to 70,000 VND ($1.50 to $2.70) and takes 10 to 15 minutes.
In An Thuong and along My Khe, you can walk to most cafés and restaurants. In the center, the riverfront and market area are walkable, but sights like the Marble Mountains and Son Tra need a ride from either base. A scooter rental costs about 120,000 to 200,000 VND ($5 to $8) per day, but Da Nang traffic gets heavy at 5 p.m. If you are not confident, use Grab or the local green electric taxis.
Season and Weather: When Each Base Works
The beach is at its best from March to August: calm water, long sunny days, and warm sea. From September to November, rain and typhoon risk go up. Red flags can close swimming at My Khe, and the sea gets rough and brown. In those months a city base is more practical because cafés, museums, malls, and covered markets are closer. December to February is cooler, around 18 to 24°C, so it is nice for walking and sightseeing but too cold for many people to swim.
What Has Changed Since 2024
The biggest change is administrative. In mid-2025, Da Nang merged with neighbouring Quang Nam province, so Hoi An, My Son, and the Marble Mountains area are now officially part of one larger Da Nang City. Maps and booking platforms have been updating names, which is why checking the exact address matters.
Electric taxis such as Xanh SM are now common alongside Grab, and international flights into Da Nang have expanded since 2024. More beachfront hotels have opened along the coast, which keeps mid-range beach prices competitive outside peak weeks like Tet, the summer holidays, and fireworks festival periods.
2026 Budget Reality
Prices below use roughly 26,000 VND to $1 and are for a standard night outside peak holidays.
- Budget: Hostel dorm bed 150,000 to 250,000 VND ($6 to $10). Private guesthouse room 400,000 to 700,000 VND ($16 to $27). A bánh mì costs 20,000 to 30,000 VND ($0.80 to $1.20), and a bowl of mì Quảng 35,000 to 50,000 VND ($1.40 to $2).
- Mid-range: Three- or four-star hotel with pool 900,000 to 1,800,000 VND ($35 to $70) in An Thuong or the center. Add 20 to 40 percent for a direct sea view.
- Comfortable: Beachfront five-star or Son Tra resort 2,500,000 to 5,500,000 VND ($96 to $210). A seafood dinner on the beach for two costs 600,000 to 1,200,000 VND ($23 to $46).
City center hotels are usually 15 to 30 percent cheaper than beach hotels of the same star rating.
Which Base Suits You
- First-timers and couples: An Thuong or central My Khe. You get sea, food, and ease.
- Families: My Khe resorts or Non Nuoc, where pools and shallow beach access are easy.
- Budget travellers and food lovers: The city center near Han Market, with cheaper rooms and local meals.
- Short stays of one or two nights: The city center, close to the airport, station, and bridges.
- Quiet-seekers: Son Tra, if you do not mind being far from restaurants.
- Hoi An day trippers: Beach side, since the road south toward Hoi An starts right along the coast.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it better to stay near the beach or in the city center in Da Nang?
For most visitors, the beach side is better because the sea, cafés, and hotels are all within walking distance, and the city center is only 10 to 15 minutes away by Grab. Choose the center if you want local food, lower prices, and easy access to the Han River at night.
Which area of Da Nang is best for first-time visitors?
My Khe Beach, especially the streets around An Thuong, suits first-timers best. You get sea views, English-friendly restaurants, and cheap Grab rides to Dragon Bridge, Marble Mountains, and the airport. Hotels here range from small guesthouses to large resorts, so you can find a fit at almost any budget.
How far is Da Nang city center from the beach?
The Han River area is about 3 to 4 km from My Khe Beach. A Grab car takes 10 to 15 minutes and usually costs 40,000 to 70,000 VND (about $1.50 to $2.70). Traffic is manageable outside rush hours, so many travellers also cycle or rent a scooter between the two.
Is Da Nang a good base for visiting Hoi An?
Yes. Hoi An is about 30 km south, roughly 40 minutes by Grab (around 300,000 to 400,000 VND, or $12 to $16). Staying in Da Nang gives you more hotel choice and lower prices, though Hoi An’s lantern-lit old town is best after dark, so consider a night or two there.
When is the worst time to stay at the beach in Da Nang?
September to November is the riskiest period, with heavy rain and occasional typhoons. Red flags can close swimming at My Khe, and waves get rough. If you visit then, a city-center hotel near cafés, museums, and malls makes wet days easier. March to August is the best beach window.
