Phu Quoc has grown so fast that many travelers in 2026 arrive expecting a quiet tropical escape and find cable cars, theme parks, and busy night markets. Con Dao has the opposite problem: it is peaceful, but flights are limited and rooms sell out in peak months. Both are excellent islands, but they offer very different trips. This guide helps you pick the right one before you book.

The Short Answer: Two Islands, Two Personalities

Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island, at about 574 km². It has resorts, a big airport, theme parks, a lively night market, and enough variety for a week. Con Dao is a group of 16 islands with a small main town. It has a protected national park, a heavy history, and only a few thousand residents.

Since the 2025 provincial mergers, Phu Quoc sits within An Giang province and Con Dao is a special zone under Ho Chi Minh City. Online listings and maps may still use the old names, so don’t be confused if you see both.

Beaches and Water: Resort Sand vs. Wild Coves

Phu Quoc’s best sand is on the west and south coasts. Bai Sao in the southeast has pale, soft sand and calm shallow water. Long Beach, near the main town of Duong Dong, is where most hotels cluster. It’s easy and convenient, but busy at sunset. The north and northeast are quieter, with more local fishing boats than sunbeds.

Con Dao’s beaches are fewer and wilder. Dam Trau on the north side has clear water and almost no development. Ong Dung and Bai Nhat feel like places you’ve found rather than been sent to. The sea is clean because the national park limits building. Some beaches have no shops at all, so bring water.

For snorkelling, Con Dao has healthier coral and better visibility on calm days. Phu Quoc’s An Thoi islands offer easy boat trips, but the reefs get heavy traffic.

History and Culture: Pearl Farms vs. Prison Island

Phu Quoc’s culture is about food and the sea. You can visit fish sauce factories, pepper farms, and pearl shops. The air near a fish sauce barrel house is salty and sharp, and you either love it or step back fast. It’s interesting, but light on history.

Con Dao is the opposite. For about a century it held political prisoners under French colonial rule and later the Saigon government. The old prison complex and Hang Duong Cemetery are serious, moving places. At the cemetery, incense smoke hangs over the graves, and Vietnamese visitors often leave offerings at night. Dress modestly and keep your voice low. Many visitors say this is the part of the trip they remember most.

Things to Do Beyond the Beach

Phu Quoc has the most choice:

  • The Hon Thom cable car, which crosses about 7.9 km of sea and is among the longest in the world
  • VinWonders, Safari, and other big attractions that work well for families
  • Sunset at Sunset Sanato or along the west coast
  • Squid fishing and four-island boat trips
  • Phu Quoc National Park for jungle walks and waterfalls (best after rain)

Con Dao is about nature and quiet:

  • Turtle nesting tours on Bay Canh island, typically from May to September, run through the national park
  • Forest trekking and bird watching in Con Dao National Park
  • Diving and snorkelling, best in calmer months
  • Cycling around the town’s tree-lined streets, and walking the seafront at dusk

Phu Quoc suits people who want to be entertained. Con Dao suits people who get bored by crowds.

Pro Tip: For Con Dao in 2026, book your flights and room first, then ask your hotel about turtle tours. Turtle nesting visits depend on permits, tides, and weather, so keep one flexible evening in your schedule. On Phu Quoc, stay in the south or northwest if you want to avoid the Long Beach crowds.

Where to Eat on Each Island

Phu Quoc is the stronger food island. The Dinh Cau night market near Duong Dong is loud, smoky, and fun. You’ll hear the clatter of metal spatulas and smell grilled squid and scallops. Prices are higher than on the mainland, so check the weight and price per kilo before ordering seafood. For a calmer meal, go to Ham Ninh fishing village for crab on the water. Try bun quay, a local noodle soup with house-made noodles, and fresh sea urchin grilled with spring onion.

Con Dao has a smaller scene, mostly seafood restaurants along the seafront and around Con Son market in town. Meals are simple, fresh, and fairly priced. The local almond-style sweets made from bang seeds are a nice small gift. Don’t expect many international restaurants, and note that some places close early. Eat dinner by 8 pm to be safe.

Getting There in 2026

Phu Quoc: The airport handles direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City (about one hour), Hanoi (about two hours), and many other cities. More international routes from Asia and Europe have been added since 2024, though schedules change by season. You can also take a ferry from Ha Tien or Rach Gia on the mainland, which takes roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the route. Check current visa rules for direct arrivals to the island.

Con Dao: Most visitors fly from Ho Chi Minh City on a small propeller plane, about 50 minutes. Seats are limited, so book early for weekends and holidays. A ferry from Tran De port in the Mekong Delta also runs, but the crossing is long and can be cancelled in rough seas. Treat it as a backup, not a plan.

Getting Around Each Island

Phu Quoc is spread out. Distances between the north, south, and main town can reach 30 to 50 km, so you’ll want a rented scooter, a taxi, or a Grab ride. Roads are good, but traffic near the south can be slow in peak season. Hotel shuttles are common.

Con Dao is compact. The main town, the prison, the cemetery, and several beaches are within a few kilometres of each other. Rent a scooter or bicycle, or arrange a driver for a day. At night the island is quiet, with only the sound of waves and the occasional scooter.

2026 Budget Reality

Approximate prices per night and per day (about 26,000 VND = US$1):

Phu Quoc

  • Budget: rooms 350,000–600,000 VND ($14–23), meals 60,000–120,000 VND ($2.30–4.60)
  • Mid-range: rooms 1,200,000–2,500,000 VND ($46–96), seafood dinner 300,000–600,000 VND ($11.50–23)
  • Comfortable: beach resorts 4,000,000–10,000,000+ VND ($154–385+)
  • Scooter rental: 130,000–200,000 VND ($5–7.70) per day

Con Dao

  • Budget: rooms 400,000–700,000 VND ($15–27), local meals 50,000–100,000 VND ($2–4)
  • Mid-range: rooms 1,300,000–2,500,000 VND ($50–96), seafood dinner 250,000–500,000 VND ($9.60–19)
  • Comfortable: luxury villas from about 4,000,000 to well over 15,000,000 VND ($154–575+)
  • Scooter rental: 120,000–150,000 VND ($4.60–5.80) per day

Flights are the main difference. Phu Quoc often has fares from about 700,000 VND ($27) on sale, while Con Dao flights commonly cost 1,500,000–3,000,000 VND ($58–115) one way. Phu Quoc has more cheap rooms. Con Dao has fewer rooms overall, so prices jump in busy months.

Best Time to Go

Both islands are best from November to April, with calm seas and mostly clear skies. Phu Quoc gets wetter and more humid from May to October, with afternoon storms and rougher water on the west side. Con Dao can also have rough seas from roughly July to October, but May to September is when turtles nest. February to April is the safest window for flat seas, good visibility, and steady flights.

Day Trip or Overnight?

Neither island works as a day trip. Phu Quoc’s flights and ferries make a same-day return from the mainland tiring and pointless, so plan at least three nights, ideally four. Con Dao is a real commitment because of limited flights, so stay a minimum of two nights, and three if you want the turtle tour or a day of snorkelling.

If you only have a day on Phu Quoc, such as during a layover, you can do a boat trip to the An Thoi islands or a short south-island loop. But the island is much better with time to slow down.

How to Choose

  • Choose Phu Quoc if you travel with children, want resort comfort, like variety, or need cheaper flights and more budget rooms.
  • Choose Con Dao if you want quiet beaches, nature, history, and don’t need nightlife.
  • Choose both if you have 8–9 days. There is no direct flight between them, so fly via Ho Chi Minh City and allow a full travel day.
