You open your phone in a Hanoi hostel and search for how to get to Ha Long Bay. In ten minutes you see a dozen prices for the same 160 km trip, from 120,000 VND to 3,000,000 VND. Some are bus tickets, some are private cars, and some are cruise packages that hide the transfer cost inside the price. In 2026 the road is faster and easier than ever, but the booking side is still confusing. This guide explains every realistic way to get from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, what each one costs, and which one fits your trip.
Which Option Fits You: A Quick Decision Guide
The distance is about 150 to 170 km depending on where you start and end. On the expressway it takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours. Here is the short version:
- Solo traveler or couple on a normal budget: limousine van from the Old Quarter.
- Tightest budget: public bus from Hanoi’s bus stations to Bai Chay.
- Family or group of three to four: private car or Grab. The price per person is often close to a limousine van.
- Overnight cruise guests: the shuttle included with your cruise, if the price is fair.
- Short on time and money is not a problem: seaplane or helicopter scenic flight combined with a road transfer.
Everything else is either unreliable or not worth the effort. The sections below explain why.
Limousine Vans: The Most Popular Choice
Limousine vans are the standard way to travel between Hanoi and Ha Long for independent travelers. These are 9 to 16 seat minibuses, usually Ford Transits or Hyundai Solatis, with reclining seats, air-conditioning, and sometimes USB ports. Most pick up at hotels in the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem area, then drop you at Bai Chay, Hon Gai, or a marina.
Expect to pay 200,000 to 350,000 VND (about $8 to $14) one way. Companies that run frequent departures include Hoang Long, Hai Au, and several smaller operators. Many have booking pages in English, and you can pay by card or Momo wallet. Cheaper “limousine” tickets, around 150,000 VND, usually mean older vehicles or a longer pickup loop around town.
Check three things before booking:
- Pickup point. Door-to-door pickup in the Old Quarter is not the same as meeting at a bus office on the edge of the city.
- Drop-off point. Bai Chay is fine for hotels. If your cruise leaves from Tuan Chau or the Hon Gai cruise port, confirm the van goes there or you will need a taxi.
- Stops. Some vans stop at a souvenir complex halfway for 20 to 30 minutes. It is a toilet break that doubles as a sales pitch for marble statues and embroidery. Ask if the route has a shopping stop.
On a good day, you will leave the narrow streets around Hang Bac, where scooters hum past and vendors stack bananas on bicycles, then hit the open expressway within 40 minutes. Rice paddies and then limestone hills appear as you near Quang Ninh. The final stretch along the coast road gives you your first glimpse of the bay.
Public and Tourist Buses: The Cheapest Way
The cheapest option is a regular intercity bus. Services run from Hanoi’s Gia Lam, My Dinh, and Yen Nghia bus stations to Bai Chay bus station in Ha Long city. Tickets are usually 100,000 to 180,000 VND ($4 to $7), and buses leave every 20 to 40 minutes in the morning.
The ride is basic. Seats are narrower than in a van, the air-conditioning varies, and drivers sometimes stop to pick up passengers along the road. The trip takes 3 to 3.5 hours. Getting to My Dinh or Gia Lam from the Old Quarter takes another 30 to 50 minutes by Grab or city bus, so the savings shrink once you count that cost and time.
This works best if you are staying near a bus station, are very budget conscious, or want to see how locals travel. The main drawback is the last leg. Bai Chay bus station is in the tourist district, but you will still need a taxi or Grab to reach Hon Gai, a marina, or a homestay.
Private Cars and Grab: The Door-to-Door Option
If you travel with luggage, children, or friends, a private car is often the best value. A four-seat sedan from Hanoi to Ha Long costs about 1,500,000 to 2,200,000 VND ($60 to $85) one way. A seven-seater is roughly 1,900,000 to 2,800,000 VND ($75 to $110). Divide that by four people and it is close to the cost of limousine tickets, with no waiting and no pickup loop.
There are two ways to book:
- Pre-booked driver through your hotel or a reputable agency. The price is fixed, the driver speaks some English, and you can ask for stops, such as a coffee break.
- Grab Car. Grab’s intercity pricing is shown in the app, and it often falls between 1,800,000 and 2,500,000 VND. The weak point is the return trip. Some drivers refuse to accept long-distance rides, or they cancel after accepting. Book early in the day, not at 5 pm.
Tolls on the expressway are normally included in a quoted private car price, but confirm this. Also ask whether the driver will wait if your cruise check-in has a delay.
Cruise Transfers: What Is Included and What to Check
Most travelers do not go to Ha Long Bay just to see the city. They come for a cruise, and the transfer is often bundled with the booking. Day cruises and overnight cruises from reputable operators usually offer a shared shuttle from Hanoi, normally leaving between 7:30 and 8:30 am and arriving in time for a noon boarding.
Shuttle prices are often added as a separate line, typically 300,000 to 500,000 VND ($12 to $20) per person round trip on mid-range cruises. Luxury cruises may offer private or premium limousine transfers, priced in the range of 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 VND round trip.
Ask these questions before you accept the bundled transfer:
- Which port does the cruise depart from: Tuan Chau, Hon Gai (Ha Long International Cruise Port), or Bai Chay? Where you board determines where the shuttle goes.
- Does the shuttle make a shopping stop?
- What time is the return drop-off in Hanoi? Many cruises end at 11 am, but traffic can make arrival in the Old Quarter closer to 3 pm.
- Can the shuttle drop you at a different hotel in Hanoi, or only at a central meeting point?
If you are staying two nights, check whether the shuttle runs with a half-empty van on the second day. If you prefer to travel independently, many operators will deduct the transfer fee from the price.
Trains, Flights, Seaplanes and Helicopters: The Unusual Options
Train
There is no reliable, regular passenger train that takes tourists from Hanoi to Ha Long. A rail link toward Quang Ninh has appeared in plans and occasional special services, but as of 2026 you should not build a trip around it. Taking a train to Hai Phong and then a bus or ferry only makes sense if you are also visiting Cat Ba Island.
Flights
Van Don International Airport, in Quang Ninh province, is roughly 50 to 60 km from Ha Long city. It is useful if you are flying in from another part of Vietnam, but for a Hanoi trip it makes little sense. The flight is short, but check-in, security, and the transfer from the airport add up to more time than the expressway. Treat it as a bonus only if a direct flight from your starting point is cheaper than going through Hanoi.
Seaplane and helicopter
Scenic flights over the bay operate from the Ha Long area and are priced as experiences, not transport. Expect roughly 4,000,000 to 7,000,000 VND ($160 to $275) per person for a 25 to 45 minute flight, depending on the route. Weather can cancel flights, especially in winter fog and during typhoon season, so do not rely on one as your only way back to Hanoi. Hanoi-to-bay helicopter transfers exist but are priced for luxury travelers and are sometimes sold as part of premium cruise packages.
Motorbike: Why Most Travelers Should Skip It
Motorbikes are banned from the expressway, so riding to Ha Long means taking older national highways, often Highway 5 and Highway 18. The ride takes 4 to 5 hours, with heavy truck traffic, many stops, and poor air quality around industrial areas near Hai Duong and Uong Bi. You also need a valid license that Vietnam accepts, and you must carry full insurance.
Experienced riders sometimes enjoy the route, especially if they continue to Cat Ba or toward Mong Cai. For first-time riders in Vietnam, a bus or car is a far safer and more comfortable choice.
What Has Changed Since 2024
The road from Hanoi to Ha Long has improved enough that the old “four hours minimum” estimate is out of date. A few changes affect your plan:
- Expressway connections are mature. The link from Hanoi through Hai Phong to Ha Long, along with the extension toward Van Don and Mong Cai, is now a continuous expressway system. Most vehicles complete the trip in under three hours when traffic is light.
- Electronic toll collection is standard. Cash lanes have been phased out on most expressways, and vehicles use tags or registered accounts. Private drivers and limousine companies handle this, but self-drive rental cars need a tag.
- Online booking is easier. More limousine operators accept foreign cards and e-wallets, and you can reserve a seat the day before.
- Cruise regulations are stricter. Authorities in Quang Ninh have increased controls on cruise routes and vessel standards to protect the bay. This means boarding points are more organized, but it also means you should confirm which pier you use.
Departure Times and Road Conditions
The expressway is smooth, but the exits from Hanoi and the approach to Ha Long are not. Traffic leaving the city center peaks from 7 to 9 am and 4:30 to 7 pm. On Friday evenings and before public holidays, queues of cars heading for the coast can add an hour or more.
Practical timing advice:
- For a cruise that boards at noon, leave Hanoi between 7:30 and 8:30 am.
- For the return, leave Ha Long before 2 pm if you want to be in Hanoi before dark, or after 8 pm to avoid traffic.
- On weekends in July and August, and on holidays such as 30 April to 1 May and 2 September, book your transport at least a week early.
- In winter, from December to February, fog can slow driving in the morning and delay boat departures. Allow an extra hour of buffer.
Arriving in Ha Long: Harbours and the Last Leg
Ha Long city is split into two main parts. Bai Chay is the tourist side, with hotels, restaurants, the Sun World park, and the bay-front promenade. Hon Gai is the older working port across the Bai Chay Bridge, with fish markets and a more local feel. The cruise port, marinas, and transport hubs are spread across these areas, so the exact drop-off matters.
Once you arrive, short trips are easy. Grab operates in Ha Long, and a ride between Bai Chay and Hon Gai costs around 50,000 to 100,000 VND ($2 to $4). Taxis from Mai Linh and Vinasun are reliable. If you walk along the Bai Chay promenade in the evening, you will smell grilled squid from the stalls near the night market and hear the clink of beer glasses at seafood restaurants, which is a good way to spend the night before or after your cruise.
For Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba, the route is different: Hanoi to Hai Phong by bus, then a ferry or speedboat to Cat Ba Island. Combined tickets usually cost 250,000 to 400,000 VND ($10 to $16) and take 3.5 to 4.5 hours in total.
2026 Budget Reality
Prices below are one way from Hanoi, based on an exchange rate of around 25,500 VND to $1. They are estimates and vary by season and operator.
- Budget: public bus, 100,000 to 180,000 VND ($4 to $7). Add 50,000 to 150,000 VND ($2 to $6) for getting to the station and for the final taxi in Ha Long.
- Mid-range: limousine van, 200,000 to 350,000 VND ($8 to $14). Cruise shuttle transfers fall in the same range, at 300,000 to 500,000 VND ($12 to $20) round trip.
- Comfortable: private sedan or SUV, 1,500,000 to 2,800,000 VND ($60 to $110) per vehicle, shared by up to four to six people.
- Luxury: premium private transfer with a cruise or a scenic seaplane flight, from 4,000,000 VND ($160) upward per person.
Avoiding Scams and Common Mistakes
- Fake “official” tickets: street agents near Hoan Kiem Lake sometimes sell tickets for the same limousine at a mark-up of 50 to 100 percent. Book directly with the operator or through your hotel.
- Cruise upgrades at the dock: some touts at the harbour offer to move you to a “better” boat. Stick to the operator you booked online and contact them directly if the plan changes.
- Surprise stops: a 30-minute shopping break can turn a 2.5-hour trip into a 3.5-hour one. Ask before you book.
- Return trip left open: many travelers book only one way and then struggle to find a seat on a busy Sunday afternoon. Book your return when you book the outbound trip.
- Missing luggage plan: vans have limited space. If you have a large suitcase, tell the operator in advance. Many cruises will also store extra luggage at the port.
Carry some cash for small purchases, but you can usually pay for transport by card or e-wallet. Download Grab and Google Maps with an offline map of the Ha Long area before you leave Hanoi, since mobile signal can drop in the hills near Quang Ninh.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to get from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay?
By expressway, the trip takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours by limousine van or private car. Public buses take 3 to 3.5 hours because they stop more often. Heavy traffic on Fridays and holidays can add an hour or more, so leave early.
What is the cheapest way to get from Hanoi to Ha Long?
The cheapest way is the public bus from Gia Lam, My Dinh, or Yen Nghia bus stations to Bai Chay, usually 100,000 to 180,000 VND ($4 to $7). Remember to add the cost of reaching the station and the final taxi to your hotel or port.
Is a limousine van better than a private car?
For one or two travelers, a limousine van is cheaper and comfortable enough. For three or more people, or if you have lots of luggage, a private car offers door-to-door service and flexible stops at a similar cost per person. Choose based on group size and schedule.
Can I do Ha Long Bay as a day trip from Hanoi?
Yes, but it is tiring. Plan about 6 hours of round-trip travel plus a 4 to 5 hour cruise. Day cruises usually leave Hanoi at 7:30 am and return by 7 pm. If you can spare it, an overnight cruise gives you much more time on the water.
Can I take the train from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay?
Not reliably. There is no regular tourist passenger train from Hanoi to Ha Long in 2026. The most practical options are limousine van, bus, or private car. Trains to Hai Phong exist, but they make sense only if you are continuing to Cat Ba Island.
