Most first-time visitors book a rushed day tour from Ho Chi Minh City, spend four hours on a bus, and end up at a crowded coconut candy workshop wondering why the delta feels staged. That’s a common 2026 complaint, and it’s avoidable. The delta rewards people who pick their stops carefully and leave the main tourist loop.
What Makes the Mekong Delta Different
The Mekong splits into nine branches here before reaching the sea, which is why Vietnamese people call it Cuu Long, “Nine Dragons.” The result is a flat, green region of about 40,000 square kilometres, cut by rivers, canals, and fruit orchards. Life runs on water. Houses face the canal, not the road, and boats carry rice, pineapples, and coconuts.
The pace is slower than in Saigon, and the people are famously open. Expect a stranger to wave you into a garden to taste rambutan. Early in the morning, the river smells of wet earth, diesel, and ripe fruit, and the only sound is the put-put of small engines.
Where to Go: The Delta’s Highlights
My Tho and Ben Tre: The Easy Gateway
My Tho is about 70 km from Ho Chi Minh City and the most visited entry point. Ben Tre, across the river, is the better choice. This is coconut country. Small family workshops make candy, coir mats, and coconut oil. Take a rowing sampan down a narrow canal under water-palm leaves. Choose a smaller operator with groups of six or fewer, and the experience feels real.
Can Tho: The Delta’s Hub
Can Tho is the region’s biggest city and the best base. The Cai Rang floating market is 6 km away. Boats arrive from 5:30 am, with produce hung on tall poles so buyers can see what each boat sells. A pineapple pole means pineapples. Go before 7:30 am, when it is busiest and the light is soft. Cai Rang has shrunk as roads and bridges improved, but it is still the largest market in the delta. Smaller Phong Dien market is quieter and more local.
Chau Doc and Tra Su: The Border Side
Chau Doc sits on the Cambodian border and feels different. You’ll see Cham and Khmer communities, floating fish farms, and Sam Mountain, which gives views over the rice plains. Nearby, Tra Su cajuput forest is the delta’s best nature stop. In the wet season, the water is covered in bright green duckweed, and you glide through it in a small boat under the tree canopy while egrets lift off the branches.
Ca Mau: The End of the Map
Ca Mau is the southern tip of Vietnam. Few foreigners come, which is the appeal. You can visit mangrove forests, shrimp farms, and Ca Mau Cape, where a wooden marker shows the country’s final point on land. It needs at least two nights.
Day Trip or Overnight?
Day trip: Works only for My Tho or Ben Tre. You leave Saigon around 7:30 am and return by 5 pm. You get a boat ride, a workshop, a fruit tasting, and lunch. It’s fine as a taste, but you will spend roughly half the day in transit.
One night: The best value. Sleep in Can Tho or Ben Tre, wake before dawn for the floating market, and return to Saigon by lunch. You see far more and avoid the tour crowds.
Two to three nights: Ideal if you want Can Tho, Chau Doc, and Tra Su. Add a slow boat to Phnom Penh if you’re continuing to Cambodia. Go for Ca Mau only with four days or more.
What to Eat and Where
Delta food is sweeter and more generous than northern cooking, with plenty of herbs, coconut, and freshwater fish. The sizzle of banh xeo batter hitting a hot pan, then the crunch as you wrap it in mustard leaves, is one of the region’s best sounds and tastes.
- Banh xeo: Larger and crunchier here than in Saigon. Try the garden-style restaurants around Can Tho, where it is served with a basket of fresh leaves.
- Hu tieu: My Tho’s signature noodle soup, light and clear, found at breakfast stalls in the town centre.
- Elephant ear fish (ca tai tuong): Fried whole and wrapped in rice paper at riverside restaurants in My Tho and Ben Tre.
- Lau mam: Fermented fish hotpot, a Can Tho and Chau Doc favourite. Strong, but rewarding.
- Can Tho night market and Ninh Kieu waterfront: Good for grilled snacks, sugarcane juice, and cheap seafood.
Getting There and Around
There is no passenger train into the delta, so buses are the main option. From Saigon’s Mien Tay Bus Station, regular coaches and limousine vans reach My Tho in about 1.5 hours, Ben Tre in 2 hours, and Can Tho in around 3.5 hours. Futa Bus Lines (Phuong Trang) is the most reliable operator, and you can book through its app.
Can Tho International Airport has domestic flights from Hanoi, Da Nang, and Phu Quoc, which saves time if you’re coming from outside the south. Within the delta, local buses link the main towns, but ride-hailing apps like Grab work well in Can Tho and My Tho. For canals and small islands, hire a boat with a driver. Motorbike rental is possible, but delta roads are narrow and trucks are heavy, so only confident riders should try.
What Changed Since 2024
Two big shifts matter for 2026 travellers. First, Vietnam’s province mergers in mid-2025 reduced the country’s provinces from 63 to 34. In the delta, Ben Tre and Tra Vinh now fall under Vinh Long, Tien Giang is part of Dong Thap, Soc Trang and Hau Giang joined Can Tho, and Bac Lieu joined Ca Mau. Kien Giang merged with An Giang. Many tickets, signs, and maps still use the old names, so check destinations by town, not province.
Second, expressway improvements have cut travel times. The My Thuan 2 Bridge and new expressway sections have made Saigon to the central delta faster, and the Can Tho to Ca Mau route is being completed in stages. Even so, weekends and holidays bring heavy traffic, so leave early.
2026 Budget Reality
The delta is one of Vietnam’s cheapest regions. These are typical 2026 prices at roughly 26,000 VND per USD.
- Budget: Guesthouse or hostel bed 150,000–400,000 VND ($6–15). Meals 40,000–80,000 VND ($1.50–3). Group day tour from Saigon 350,000–600,000 VND ($14–23).
- Mid-range: Hotel room 600,000–1,500,000 VND ($23–58). Restaurant meals 100,000–250,000 VND ($4–10). Shared floating market boat 100,000–200,000 VND ($4–8) per person; a private boat is 300,000–500,000 VND ($12–19).
- Comfortable: Riverside boutique hotel or eco-lodge 2,000,000–4,500,000 VND ($77–173). Private car with driver from Saigon 1,800,000–2,800,000 VND ($70–108) per day. Seafood dinners 300,000–600,000 VND ($12–23) per person.
Best Time and Practical Tips
The dry season, from December to April, brings cooler mornings and little rain, with temperatures between 24°C and 34°C. March and April can bring saltwater intrusion that affects orchards, though it rarely bothers visitors. The green season, from May to November, is hotter and wetter, but the landscape is lush. September to November is flood season in the upper delta, ideal for Tra Su and Chau Doc.
- Wear light cotton, a hat, and sandals you can get wet. Carry mosquito repellent for dusk.
- Carry small notes. Many boat drivers and village stalls don’t take cards.
- Pay for fruit and snacks as you go. Tasting is free, but the sales pitch comes after.
- Avoid tours that include five or more stops in a day. Two or three is better.
- Mobile data works well almost everywhere, and an eSIM is easier than a physical card.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do you need in the Mekong Delta?
Two days and one night is the sweet spot. It lets you sleep in Can Tho or Ben Tre, see the floating market at dawn, and avoid the rushed feel of a day tour. Add a third day if you want Chau Doc and Tra Su forest.
Is the Mekong Delta worth visiting?
Yes, if you go beyond the standard day trip. The delta offers a slower pace, village life, fruit orchards, and strong regional food. Choose a smaller operator or stay overnight, and it often becomes a highlight of a Vietnam trip rather than a filler stop.
What is the best way to get from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta?
Bus is the best balance of cost and comfort. Coaches from Mien Tay Bus Station reach Can Tho in about 3.5 hours for 150,000–200,000 VND ($6–8). A private car costs more, but suits families, small groups, or travellers who want flexible stops along the way.
What time should I visit the Cai Rang floating market?
Arrive between 5:30 and 7:30 am. Trading is busiest at sunrise, and by 8 am many boats have finished selling. Go on a weekday if you can, since weekends bring more tourist boats. Dry season mornings are cooler and clearer than wet season ones.
Is the Mekong Delta safe for tourists?
Yes, it is generally very safe. The main risks are petty theft in busy markets, overcharging at docks, and fast traffic on narrow roads. Use licensed boats with life jackets, agree prices beforehand, and take care with belongings in crowded areas.
